Galway Sound Lab where sound meets sustainability

Sustainability is central to our work in acoustics. As a laboratory, we recognise our responsibility to advance research that benefits both society and the environment.

We strive to reduce our footprint through waste minimisation, recycling, and digital-first workflows that cut unnecessary resource use. Our practices are guided by continuous reflection and alignment with international sustainability goals, ensuring that we remain accountable and adaptable.

Our research makes the greatest impact: developing knowledge and solutions that reduce harmful noise, improve soundscapes, and contribute to healthier, more resilient communities. By working across disciplines, we support the design of environments that are not only acoustically effective but also environmentally responsible.

For us, sustainability is a journey of ongoing improvement. By embedding it into our daily activities and long-term vision, we aim to show how acoustic science can shape a sustainable future.

A recent paper by Dr Eoin King highlights how environmental noise has traditionally been dismissed as an inevitable fact of life and has not been targeted and controlled to the same extent as other health risks.

Sounds of Climate Change

As part of the University of Galway public engagement and outreach programme, the Sounds of Climate Change was presented by Eugene McKeown at the Galway Climate Inspirations Festival. The Festival is organised by Galway City Council’s Climate Action Team and uses theatre, art and music to inspire debate and action on the Galway City climate action plan.
